Visiting Southern Oklahoma

Southern Oklahoma celebrates the summer and fall seasons with small town events and festivals, from Broken Bow and Poteau through south central Oklahoma Chickasaw Country, to the Great Plains towns of Lawton and Altus. Durant, home of the Native American Choctaw Nation, celebrates its heritage and spring blossoms at the Magnolia Festival of Oklahoma. Athletes keep challenged with events including the Roadkill Rally in Ardmore and the Quartz Mountain Diamondback 100 in Altus. Rodeo is an Oklahoma mainstay and the Lawton Rangers PRCA Rodeo is one of the best in the nation. Celebrate Summer and Fall exploring southern Oklahoma’s festivals and events.

The southern Oklahoma town of Durant kicks off 2012 summer fun with the Magnolia Festival of Oklahoma. From May 30th to June 2nd, the Choctaw Nation Event Center fills with games, festivities and entertainment. Kids enjoy the Children’s Parade, turtle and sack races, and their own talent show stage. Events also feature shopping vendor booths, car and quilt shows and live music. Headliners include Kenny Seratt, Dustin Perkins Band and Spur 503.

Oklahoma cyclists set your training for June 8th and 9th in Ardmore. The 19th Annual Red River Roadkill Rally begins at the Santa Fe Depot on Main Street downtown, with 20, 40 and 60-mile courses for participants. Billed as a tour, not a race, the Roadkill Rally features an early morning continental breakfast, as well as food and drink for riders at the finish. Ride scenic southern Oklahoma, including a ride around Lake Murray.

Another fun Oklahoma cycling event is the 2012 Quartz Mountain Diamondback 100. The 5th annual event features courses from 30 to 100 miles long, all starting and finishing in Altus. Travel the scenic prairies of southwest Oklahoma on August 4th. Bring the family for a fun ride around the Altus reservoir, and enjoy a day at Quartz Mountain State Park recreation area.

Southern Oklahoma’s culture and heritage is rooted in the Old West. Summer and fall in the Sooner State is not complete without a visit or two at rodeos and festivals celebrating Oklahoma’s history. Lawton hosts one of the top US rodeos in August. The 2012 Lawton Rangers PRCA Rodeo is August 8th through the 11th at LO Ranch Arena.

Another great rodeo is the Great Plains Stampede Rodeo in Altus. The 2012 rodeo is August 23rd through the 25th at the Altus Rodeo Arena. Scheduled in conjunction with the Altus Western Heritage Week and the Altus Air Force Base Cattle Drive on the Base on the 23rd, Altus is the place to be late August. Don’t miss the Parade on Saturday!

For collectors and Cowboys at heart, be sure to visit Cowboy Trade Days in Poteau. Held at the Poteau Fairgrounds on Highway 271 South, Trade Days features Western, Cowboy and Native American goods for sell or trade. Along with the market, entertainment includes live music and cowboy poetry for all to enjoy. The 2012 Poteau Trade Days are November 3rd and 4th.
